If you want a lawn that will make the neighbours green with envy, Stuart Wilson, one of Ireland's leading turf specialists, including Croke Park and FIFA pitch venue manager, knows how to get perfect grass.
Since taking over as pitch manager in 2012, Stuart has overseen the maintenance and preparation of the iconic playing surface for some of the biggest occasions in Irish sport, from All-Ireland finals to major summer concerts.
This summer, he has taken his expertise to an even bigger stage, working in Atlanta, USA, as a pitch venue manager for the FIFA World Cup.
The appointment marks another milestone in a career that has earned widespread respect within the turf management industry.
Before joining the GAA's headquarters team, Stuart worked as a groundskeeper at Arsenal FC's stadium in London and at Dublin's Aviva Stadium.
Last year, he was also nominated for Turf's Top Influencer 2025.
The scale of preparation required for the World Cup is enormous.
FIFA's pitch management programme for the 2026 tournament began in 2022 and has involved extensive research and testing to create consistent playing surfaces across venues in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Despite the differences in climate and stadium design across North America, the objective remains the same as any homeowner's lawn ambition: creating a healthy, resilient, high-performing grass surface.
According to lawn care specialist Stefan Molloy of The Lawnman LTD, achieving an ideal garden starts with fundamental feeding and fertilisation.
He told HomeandStyle: “What's often overlooked is the importance of cutting the lawn with a sharp blade once per week.
"If the blade is blunt, it will drag and tear the grass rather than cutting it cleanly, which damages the leaf and leaves it vulnerable to disease and stress.
“The biggest mistake we find homeowners making is not mulching the grass during the hot summer months.
"Instead of using the mower box, mulching returns those nutrients back into the lawn, helping it to self-feed and stay healthier during periods of heat stress.”
While homeowners may not have access to the advanced technology found beneath elite sporting surfaces, many of the same principles apply.
Beneath the Croke Park pitch lies a highly engineered system featuring advanced drainage, ventilation and heating technology designed to cope with heavy use and unpredictable Irish weather.
Ground staff continuously monitor factors such as moisture levels, hardness, traction and recovery to maintain consistent performance throughout the year.
Similarly, Stefan insists that routine maintenance remains the key factor in both professional and residential lawns.
He explained: “The principles are actually very similar between residential lawns and professional football pitches – both require regular feeding, proper mowing techniques and attention to detail.
"The main difference is the intensity and frequency of the maintenance programme.”
While World Cup pitches receive daily attention and carefully controlled nutrient programmes, Stefan believes homeowners can achieve impressive results by following the same core principles on a smaller scale.
Regular feeding, correct mowing and consistent maintenance all contribute to a healthier patch of grass.
Stefan added, “Overall, the lawn needs to receive a treatment every eight weeks, minimum, in order to maintain the correct nutrient levels.”
As Stuart helps prepare some of the world's top playing surfaces for football's biggest tournament and Stefan helps homeowners care for their beloved gardens, their work serves as a reminder that whether it's a World Cup venue, Croke Park, or a residential back garden, great grass starts with the same foundations.
