Finding the right living room layout is essential

Change up your living room layout for maximum cosiness, writes Emily Westbrooks

Let's talk layouts. I tend to think of layouts in typical Irish homes as obvious, but that doesn't have to be the case.

Of course, there are only so many ways you can fit a sofa in a living room.

However, it pays to think outside the box when it comes to what goes into your living room box!

You don’t have to pack a living room full to enjoy it (B&M)

First, think about how you use the space. If you like to have people over, you'll want to maximise the seating options, and keep in mind how those seating options can encourage the activities taking place there.

You'll want as many spots to sit as possible; bonus points for stools that can double as seating but can easily be stored away.

Even if the fireplace isn’t functional, it’s still a focal point (Habitat)

For ultimate lounge mode, consider whether you can squeeze an L-sofa into your living room. If not, can you swing a large ottoman that can be moved when it's film time?

A fireplace is obviously a focal point, and windows can also dictate where sofas or chairs are situated. Don't place a sofa front of a fireplace, but you can put a or sofa in front of a window.

Try chairs and a sofa facing each other next to a fireplace for a classic layout (Sofology)

But the bottom line is that you shouldn't stick with the same staid layout in your ing room if it doesn't serve your lifestyle because it looks proper.

Instead, lean hard into your own lifestyle and build your layout around functionality.
