For a living room straight out of an interiors mag, go with a dark sofa

Make a statement in your living room with a dark sofa

We have two very comfortable, nice-looking sofas in our living room, but they're both beige.

They wash well, but sometimes I have dreams of dark sofas that would hide a bit more of the daily abuse a family sofa takes.

A dark sofa also offers a completely different statement in a room.

In fact, I'd argue that only a dark sofa can make a statement.

No matter how cool or interesting your beige sofa, it's not going to be a showstopper to anyone walking in the room.

Of course, the best thing about a dark sofa is that small smudges or stains are a non-issue. For my money, I still want a sofa that's eminently washable, but a dark sofa means you don't have to wash cushion covers for every small mark.

The key to making a dark sofa a seamless addition is to ensure it isn't the only dark item in the space.

Sprinkling in a few other pieces of furniture throughout the room will give it balance. You could bring in a darker wood bookcase, or an occasional chair in a slightly lighter tone than your statement sofa.

Material matters, too. There's nothing that looks more luxurious than a velvet or chenille dark sofa.

You'll have a living room that looks like it leapt straight out of an interiors magazine.
