It's all over the catwalk and now returns to our homes, but is your house Granny chic?

Scour the cupboards at home, check out charity shops, online marketplaces, and auctions to get the Granny chic look.

Dial up your inner octogenarian and invest in cabinets and dressers, dig out or borrow the good china, lay lace tablecloths, and hang frills everywhere, from curtains under the scullery sink to trimming bed linen and cushions.

It’s all over the catwalks and adorning curtains, pelmets, cushions, and tableware.

Granny chic is a thing, a nostalgic, backwards glance at eras when setting the scene for special occasions was a thing.

It’s a look that has lasted the test of time, time and again.

Channel Italian Nonna for brunch

granny chic

Italian grandmothers have a special place in popular culture.

While steely, they all appear to be great in the kitchen and terrific at tablescaping, bringing together heirlooms and everyday elements.

Shrimps x Oliver Bonas has nailed the Italian Nonna look with soft caramel-coloured crochet tablecloth, €120, and ceramic bread or fruit basket, €54.

In the lead image, it includes a Lenny lion butter dish, €54; striped coupe stemware, €41.50 per pair, and plaited place mats, €24 each. Perfect for serving brunch.

Welcome the return of brown furniture

After a long period in decor Siberia brown furniture is back.

It adds warmth and richness to a room, especially in a period property.

The piece also tells a story. It may have belonged to someone in your family, or you picked it up in a vintage shop or at auction.

This chest of drawers is what hooks this whole look by Yellow London together.

It makes the wallpaper pop, too.

Take a seat in a classic kitchen

Plain white squares, tiled all the way to the picture rail, is a look that is being reprised.

You can play with the grouting to add contrast.

A round table, with a simple cotton tablecloth, €25.70, for a 240cm by 120cm size, surrounded by square chairs with a basketweave seat, €108 each, to order online only, with footed bowls in either Bordeaux or navy colourways, €4.54 each, all from Sostrene Grene.

The blue and white vase shown is sold out.

Add drama to the kitchen sink

In the days before dishwashers, the kitchen sink was where all the action happened.

For sheer style and practicality, the ergonomics of using a curtain to screen off the units under the sink, especially in a small space with little circulation, is a winner.

Tori Murphy treatment shown here in dresser check organic cotton fabric, in dusky pink, which costs about €120 per square metre, is on trend and easy to execute.

The sheer linen and wool fabric, in natural, is a simple and effective window treatment. Price €127 psm.

Stuffed sofas and upright armchairs

UK luxury home accessories brand Birdie Fortescue shows you how to create a sitting room that feels like a special occasion space.

Choose a well-upholstered sofa, from €4,396, and straight-backed armchairs, such as this Sorgue stripe one, pictured, €1,174, in mismatched fabrics.

The seating should be strewn with cushions, such as the blue and taupe, scrolling crewel work cushion, €152, while pleated and bordered silk lampshades, €126 each, help diffuse light.

Finishing touches include a paisley-pattern hand-knotted rug, €2,175, and the Pavilion coffee table, €807, which has a carved leaf frame and natural cane interior.
