Saint Patrick may have banished the snakes from Ireland. With his serpent motif, designer Jonathan Adler is keen to reintroduce them.
Jonathan Adler, the man credited with reprising Hollywood Glamour with his modern American glamour take on the mid-century look, is exploring new surface options.
Having reintroduced the curved sofa to posh sitting rooms, parodied pop culture with pharma-inspired decorative objects and injected a love of colour into every decorative item, his work is utterly covetable.
A new collaboration with curtain and blind company, Hillary's, offers attitudinal window dressing.
The collection offers a range of made-to-measure Roman blinds and curtains, featuring twenty-five fabrics across four colourways.
Each showcases one of his signature motifs.
From graphic checkerboards and sculptural cubes to sinuous snake patterns, painterly ink drops and punchy stripes, each channel Adler’s light-hearted approach to interiors.
“Window dressings are where the eye rests, and I want the eye to rest somewhere fabulous,” says Adler. “These designs don’t just dress a window; they define a room.”
Eden is his snake motif, and it features on blinds in the opening shot, but the scale is too small to elicit ophidiophobia.
It is also seen in his Serpentine sofa, whose back features scrolled ridges, like the perfect wave, that take their form from the serpent.
“I’m super snaky, but my version is defanged,” he says, giving a “huge shout out to St. Patrick", but his favourite colour is blue, not green.
It is the miracle colour; all blues work together.
"I like all of her different hues, from navy to cerulean to Tiffany. People don’t appreciate it enough."
This collection isn’t about trends; it is about mood, he says.
"Your décor should announce to visitors that you are a little sassier and more glamour-centric than they think.
“These designs shift the energy of a room instantly, injecting spaces with personality and joy,” says Victoria Robinson, product manager at Hillarys.
It’s about us tapping into the mood of the moment, explains Sarah Able, the group’s marketing manager.
Adler is the third design name to join the firm. It has already collaborated with Abigail Ahern and Poodle and Blonde.
Curtains are having a resurgence.
Part of the reason is that industry data shows that around 18 per cent of all heat loss in the home happens through the windows,
Through the British Blind and Shutter Association, Hillarys partnered with experts at the University of Salford’s Energy House Laboratory, a climate-controlled test house that allowed researchers to measure how blinds, curtains and shutters perform in real-world winter conditions.
The results showed that Roman blinds with a blackout lining can reduce heat loss by up to 21 per cent, while curtains with a thermal lining reduce heat loss by around 14 per cent.
Closing blinds and shutters at night provides an extra insulating layer, while opening window dressings on sunny days helps harness free solar warmth.
Starting prices for a Roman blind are from €244 for a 65 cm wide by 75 cm deep size, while curtains start from €288 for a pair that are 123 cm wide and 137 cm deep. Prices include measuring and fitting by a local advisor.
