Now the house opens into a small lobby and then into the hall, where there is room to deposit outerwear, shopping, sports equipment and a baby’s buggy.

The simple move allowed light to continue to illuminate the lounge and created a boundary around which to position their furniture.

It was painted white with the original two front rooms turned into one big space.

To square off the sitting room, as the owners put it, they installed a Crittal-style glazed wall that also gave them the room to have a proper entrance hall.

One half of the couple, who was good at DIY, installed fashionable panelling to wainscotting level in the room and painted this and the underside of the stairs in a warm grey.

This softened the effect of the spotlight over the sofa, helping to diffuse the light and create a focal point of interest.

With a small child in the house, they laid an antique Persian rug down on the herringbone laminate floor.

They needed one that was wipeable, so plumped for a style from Newry-based Kukoon Rugs.

Secreted off the lounge is a utility room and a downstairs guest w.c.

Double doors lead through to the eat-in kitchen, which features grey gloss units and opens out to the south-facing back garden.

Using reclaimed brick from Mac’s Salvage in Islandbridge, the couple built raised beds, adding timber surrounds.

There is pedestrian rear access to a gated lane.
