Mood-enhancing colour fixes to banish January blues

Colour can be transformative. From pops to drenching furniture and playing with tonal patterns, here are 7 easy ways to bring it in.

By mid-January, any momentum you had carried through from the Christmas period has dissolved.

Yet the house is likely in need of a little TLC. Push out all the deep cleaning intentions for another few weeks and instead invest in some easy ways to amp up the dopamine levels using cool colours.

Here are 7 ways to work it:

Apricot shades in the bedroom

It’s a new season, and it’s time to shake things up in the bedroom.

A simple way to reboot the mood there is to switch out dark shades of bedding for something more springlike.

These single duvet sets from H&M Home are designed for children, but adults should take a leaf out of the Nordic countries and install two single quilts and covers on the double bed.

That way, each of you can hog your own quilt and cover. It is due in stores and online in early February.

Restful olive in the lounge

The Jax is a modular sofa by HK Living. Its soft curves will bring a playful twist to the lounge, and the various sections can be combined to create the bold setup, shown here.

Start by purchasing the middle element, an armless piece that can also work as a lounge chair, €750, to order from April and the Bear.

The set-up also shows built-in bookcases painted in a soft, chalky blue.

Add a positive mood and warm light to a room with an infusion of vitamin yellow, a colour that symbolises the warming sun.

Josy is the ideal lamp for creating a positive atmosphere in the bedroom, living room or hallway.

It looks equally good atop a large piece of furniture such as a sideboard. Standing 51 cm tall, it will energise the entire ambience.

It is priced at €119 to order from Woo Design.

ommjaenge bench with storage 1438528 pe984783 s5

Sunset seat in the kitchen

Ommjange is a smart bench with a lid that is perfect to have in the hallway since it offers both storage and an extra seat.

The textile weave along its sides brings in colour and will also help soften the acoustics of the space.

The print creates a warm and inviting atmosphere.

If, like many in Ireland, you use the back door more than the front, then install it in the kitchen or utility room. Store hats, scarves and gloves belonging to the household during the cold months. It costs €99 from Ikea.
