One-bedroom €15k studio for those looking to avoid Ireland’s housing market

This €15,000 one-bedroom studio could be the perfect solution to Ireland's rising property prices and allow its new owner to live without the shackles of today's massive mortgages.

With a Halloween deadline to tow this one-bedroom, one-bathroom studio apartment with a 20-square-metre glazed deck to its new mooring, the candy-stripe pink vessel might provide a live-aboard home or income stream to a buyer with the money and berth to accommodate it.

A former fishing boat that was converted into a short-let studio apartment in Galway city docks is seeking a new owner.

Painted a pink that would make Barbie blush, the MV Polaris, better known on the Airbnb platform as the Pink Boat, has welcomed aboard many revellers to the City of the Tribes.

It is one of a fleet of vessels owned and operated by Captain Sam Field Corbett’s SeaStay, a short-let business in Gaillimh.

It was rented out to tourists on the Airbnb platform.

She’s being retired from service and replaced by a 60-metre-long ship that he’s just sailed from Holland.

It has an apartment at the bow and a four-bedroom unit at the stern.

Now that the new purchase has made port, there isn’t room at the dock for Polaris.

Once a steel-hulled fishing boat at Rossaveel in Connemara, the departure point for the ferries to the Aran Islands, the 18-metre-long craft is being sold directly by the captain.

The boat is about 4.5 metres wide.

wheelhouse

Below deck is the studio apartment comprising a double bunk to one side and a fully appointed galley kitchen with a breakfast counter, which is in the converted wheelhouse on the other side.

To the fore is a compact study and lounge area. There is a wet room shower also at this level.

Up on deck there’s a 20 square metre teak-floored space enclosed by glass panels with a candy-striped awning to make it weathertight. This needs a little attention to make it shipshape. The deck needs scrubbing and decluttering.

sink

It comes with 500 watts of solar electric, a 420 AH battery bank to store the electricity, and a 5 kVA charger/invertor to supply a fitted mains electric system. There is oil-fired ambient heating and a bottle gas boiler & cooking & fridge.

Waste management is another consideration. It comes with a compact toilet, a 2,000 litre holding tank that gives about two months' use, and a 1,500 litre freshwater tank with filtered supply.

The 17-metre-long boat needs a mooring, somewhere to berth or park it. It can be moored at marinas along the inland waterways network, which offer facilities including being able to plug into the grid, Sam says.

“If the buyer is someone who’s never been on a boat, then they really need to moor it at a marina that is fully serviced.”

Otherwise, it is off-grid living.

If you have a family member who lives in an estuary or sheltered cove, you could put the vessel on boat feet that will maintain her upright in any tidal zone, Sam suggests, adding that a quay wall could be another option.

Extending to 185 square metres, including the deck, the studio apartment is seeking €15,000 and is being sold by its owner, whose number is in the listing above and also below.

In addition to needing your own berth, you will need to have the resources to tow this vessel from the Long Walk in Galway city to your own waterside berth prior to Saturday, Oct 31st.

Sam counsels would-be buyers to engage a marine surveyor to look at the craft pre-purchase, a requirement by any insurance company.
