Five years ago, Time Out magazine listed Phibsboro as one of the coolest neighbourhoods on the planet.

Formerly flatland, it offers a wide range of housing stock from affordable cottages in off Dorset Street to the trophy homes of the North Circular Road and Rathdown Road.

Bounded by the Royal Canal to the north and the fire station to the south, the Luas has transformed the borough, which sits high above the rest of the city.

Other highlights include Fizzfest, a community and arts festival, and it being home to Dalymount Park and Bohemian Football Club, Bohs, one of the city’s greatest sports spaces.

Four years ago, Time Out listed Dublin 8 in its annual index. Blackpitts is part of this historic area and is said to have earned its evocative name from the vats of tannic acid used by leather tanners to soak the animal hides.

It was home to numerous breweries and then went on to develop a reputation as one of the worst slums in the city.

Fast forward a couple of centuries, and this secret area off Clanbrassil Street is now home to some of the capital’s hippest spots, including The Fumbally, Hen’s Teeth and Teeling’s Whiskey distillery.

It’s also one of the first and only places in the capital where former warehouses were converted into apartments.
