Mayo is bursting with pride, so much so that estate agents are flying the GAA flag colours at every opportunity.

Achill Sound, the most lee-side of villages on Ireland’s largest island, is connected to the mainland by the Michael Davitt Bridge, a Calatrava-style structure that looks like whalebones.

The parish welcomed the Sam Maguire last weekend to the sound of five piping bands, the trophy having earlier visited the islands with footage of it on the bridge of the Clare Island ferry.
