When we think of townhouses, our minds turn to terraced homes in cities, often set over three or more floors.

We rarely take the literal description.

These homes were built in towns where people lived in the town.

Even its main street had residential units.

It’s a model town and county councils are keen to see it reinstated, and with good reason.

You can walk to shops, schools, restaurants and bars and having the locale populated at night makes the place feel alive rather than shutters being pulled down at 6 pm.

Number 6 Carn Gardens is a 116 square metres townhouse on Newtownbutler Road on the edge of Clones in northwest Co. Monaghan.

It is just minutes from the Co. Fermanagh border.

The three-bedroom, three-bathroom two-storey property has been upgraded by its owner and has a B3 Ber-rating.

It now offers what most homeowners are looking for - a blank canvas where all the dirty work is done.

You get to do the nice parts of becoming a homeowner, the decorating and furnishing.

And much of the house is empty, save for new kitchen cabinets and bathrooms.

At hall level, there is a separate living room and kitchen.

The living room is to the front and has a wood-burning stove set into a raised hearth and a buff brick surround.

A door takes you through to the dual-aspect kitchen, where there is a guest w.c. and a back door that opens out to the lane and rear.

There are three double bedrooms upstairs.

The landing has a rooflight to wash it in daylight, as is the family bathroom, which is shared by the two doubles to the front of the house.

The principal bedroom is to the back and has a windowed ensuite bathroom.

A house in this condition at this price may be unusual to those shopping in Dublin's environs.

It is reflective of this part of Co. Monaghan, says Una Rooney of Sherry FitzGerald Conor McManus, who recently sale agreed another terraced house on the same street.

A two-up, two-down style of property, immaculately presented, with a C1 Ber-rating and extending to 79 square metres, came to market seeking €175,000 and sold for well in excess of its asking price.

Clones is about a 20-minute drive beyond Monaghan town, she counsels.

And the drive from Dublin to Monaghan town takes an average of about two hours.

Number 4 Carn Gardens is a considerably larger house, has an extra bedroom, additional bathrooms and off-street parking.

The house hasn’t been lived in for a while and may also be eligible for the vacant home grant.

Sherry FitzGerald Conor McManus is seeking €185,000.
